The total price has two parts: the hardware and the installation. Some companies bundle them into a single quote, others list them separately. Either way, it helps to understand what you're paying for so you can spot a good deal — or a padded one.
The charger unit itself is the wall-mounted box that plugs into your car. A quality single-phase 7kW charger — the most common type for Australian homes — costs anywhere from $750 to $2,000 depending on the brand and how smart it is. Basic models just charge the car. Smart models connect to an app, track energy use, schedule off-peak charging, and some can even detect your surplus solar and divert it straight into the car (SolarQuotes, 2025).
The installation: this covers the hardware, labour and electrical safety components. It will consider cabling (specifically the length and size), switchboard condition and potential upgrades required. A simple installation, with no additional cabling, no switchboard upgrades and close to the garage door, will have a lower installation price, compared to an installation requiring long cable runs, trenching and a detached garaged. What Can Push the Cost Higher?
The quotes that blow out to $3,500+ almost always come down to one (or more) of these factors:
Switchboard upgrades: If your home was built before 2000, it likely didn't consider larger power consumption in the future and may contain asbestos. Without a switchboard upgrade, wiring issues can occur causing hazards for your home, and health concerns if not removed. To ensure safety standards are met, an upgrade should take place. Additional costs depend on how large the upgrade needs to be, it would be best to speak with your installer about pricing.
Distance from switchboard: Every extra metre of cable between your switchboard and the charger adds cost. For example, if you wanted the EV charger in a detached garage, and an extra 10-15 metres of cabling was required, you would need to pay extra for this extra cabling, potential heavy-gauge cabling for protection, and conduit. A good rule of thumb: closer to the board means a cheaper install. As the cable length gets longer, the more likely the cable size will also need to increase, changing the cost.
Three-phase supply: The three-phase EV chargers are typically three times faster at charging than a single-phase charger. However, if your home is single-phase the cost to switch to a three-phase inverter can be anywhere between $2,500-$6,000 (Celere, 2025), and could be more depending on other factors. Although, the single-phase chargers provide 30-60km of charging range speed per hour (WSG Group, 2026). In most cases, a single phase charger will be suitable for home charging requirements.
Cosmetic or custom mounting. If you want the cable concealed through walls, routed through the ceiling cavity, or the charger pedestal-mounted rather than wall-mounted, expect to pay extra for the labour and materials.

How Does Solar Change the Economics?
Charging an EV from the grid on Synergy's A1 tariff costs about 32.37 cents per kWh (Synergy, 2025). For a car that uses 15 kWh per 100 km, that's roughly $4.86 to drive 100 km — already far cheaper than petrol. But if you charge from your own solar panels during the day, your per-kilometre cost drops to almost nothing.
A typical Perth commuter driving 40 km a day needs about 6-10 kWh of charge. A 6.6kW solar system generates more than enough surplus on most days to cover that, especially if the car charges while you're at work (via a timer) or on weekends. Over a year, that's around $700–$900 you'd otherwise spend on grid electricity — or $2,500+ you'd spend on petrol.

Synergy's Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS) is a scheme where residential, non-for-profit and education customers earn credit for sending energy back to the grid. Between the hours of 7am-3pm this is 2c per kWh of energy, and as demand is higher between 3pm-9pm this rate is 10c per kWh (Synergy, 2026). However, with an EV, this power is far more useful going into charging your vehicle than receiving a few cents credit. Can I just use the portable charger that came with my EV?
You can, but this is best for days where you drive low kilometres. The portable charger takes much longer to charge as it is a level 1 charger. It will typically charge between 1-4km every 10 minutes. For this to reach 100km of charge it will take approximately 5 hours. Whereas with a level 2 wall charger, it charges 4-12km every 10 minutes, equating to 100km of charge every 2 hours (Electric Vehicle Council, 2023).
Do I need a dedicated circuit for an EV charger?
Yes. When getting an electric vehicle, for safety and reliability, level 2 EV chargers require a dedicated circuit. It's also important to consider whether the EV supply equipment used by the car is compatible with the charger. Your electrician will install a separate circuit breaker in the switchboard.
How long does installation take?
It typically takes between 2-4 hours for most EV installs. For complex installations, please allow more time. All EV chargers require a Western Power application, which can extend the time until the charger is ready to use, sometimes by a few weeks.
Is there a government rebate for home EV chargers in WA?
